Memorizing the Bible

You know those movies that you grow up with that even years upon years later, you can still quote?  I guess I never realized how much I watched some of these movies when I was younger.  I put Aladdin in today and my girls sat there amused and enthralled.  I found myself able to say the entire movie- every line to the movie with it.  I have been that way with some of my kids’ favorites like Shrek, 1-4, but we hardly ever watch Aladdin.

It goes to show, things that we are exposed to when we are younger really stick with us.  And repetition really does help.  I was exposed to a lot of Bible stories as a child.  Every Sunday in Sunday school, my parents were very particular to teach me from the Bible and inform me of the specific things that happened.  I am able to draw upon those Bible stories in my every day life.

The other day when we were visiting with some friends, we were discussing first words and the first time that we recall cussing.  How the reaction of the parents really influenced us in our futures.  Things like that stay with kids.  I wish that I would have studied the Bible more and memorized more scripture as a child.  I wish that I had put my heart and soul into memorizing scripture and where things were in the Bible.  I would love to go to seminary just to gain the knowledge that I crave about Christianity and the Bible.

If we expose ourselves to the Bible daily, and really study and strive to learn it – then we are able to pull upon those verses when needed.  Recently I was in a situation where someone was asked if the scriptures were followed to come to the conclusion.  I wish that I could have drawn upon my knowledge of scripture and asked specific questions.  Instead I was left without knowledge of what I wanted to ask leaving me with even more questions after.

So- the Bible tells us to hide His word in our hearts, let the word of Christ dwell in us richly… Unfortunately, if it wasn’t for the concordance, I couldn’t tell you where either of these verses are found, although I know them, I have never really been able to memorize the GPS (God’s Positioning System) of the Bible.

But thanks to the internet and concordance:

Let the Word of Christ Dwell in You richly – Colossians 3:16

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.  – Psalms 119:11

We are told that we need to memorize scripture.  So therefore – I think that I am going to start doing a scripture a day- or maybe a week.

There is a great program that our church is starting called AWANA – it helps kids learn scripture every week.  I have to think of something that helps me and motivates me to learn and memorize scripture.  This blog helps me do my devotions every day, and keeps me accountable, now I need to figure out how to stay accountable to memorizing scripture.  How do you guys stay accountable?

do I mis-use the Bible?

WOW!   This morning I sat and started to read through Ecclesiastes.   I don’t know if the author of Ecclesiastes, Perhaps King Solomon, had a very sarcastic view on life or if he was just babbling.   But I can definitely see how this book could get a lot of people into trouble if they don’t know the full book or continue to read.   There are verses in there that say things like; eat, drink and enjoy the days on earth because they are meaningless, it is good to enjoy your time on earth and do not worry about anything. To get the full meaning of the book, you need to read it all- the true gems are the last two verses.   This book was written by someone (according to my study Bible) that was near the end of his life, he sees man in pursuit of so many things and vainly pursuing hopes and expectations- but faith teaches him that God has ordered all things according to his own purposes and that we need to accept our limitations.   The last two verses are the wr...

What do you fight about?

I heard a blood curdling scream from the other room, followed by the cries of my other child and then a smack.   I had been sitting at the computer, and leaned my head back closed my eyes, took a deep breath and went to encounter the argument head on.   Apparently my youngest daughter was playing with a stuffed giraffe that my oldest daughter sometimes sleeps with.   Amidst the crying and tears, I was able to formulate the events that took place.   My youngest daughter had gone to the toy room and gotten the giraffe (a green 16” giraffe with brown spots) out of the room and brought it into the other room.   Here, the older sister saw that the coveted giraffe was not in her room and grabbed it from her sister.   The younger one screamed and bit the older sister who then cried and hit the little sister.   As I took another cleansing breath I began dealing with the issue at hand.   It is very difficult to reason with a 2 and 3 year old and let alone ...

Making Imperfections Perfect

Recently I was blessed with the opportunity to re-hash Genesis with a group of friends.   We each took a few chapters and summarized those chapters and went through the group.   We covered it all in about 45 minutes.   It was a lot of information to take in, but also fun to hear our friends breathlessly try to fit in everything that they could about the stories that we already knew, into the short few minutes they were given to do this in.   The book of Genesis has an awful lot of drama.   Hearing pieces of it, I thought a soap opera writer couldn’t have done better themselves.   God makes man perfect, but gives us free will – Man sins- Man is thrown out of the Garden of Eden- Man has two sons- One son kills the other son, the world goes down hill.   God sends a flood to kill everything and start over.   He then calls a man who is really really old to follow him.   Abraham has a wife Sarah- Sarah can’t have babies so tells him to ...
