The verse that really stuck out to me in the Bible reading that I did yesterday was Romans 8:5 “Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their mind set on what the Spirit desires.”  I really like that verse- it is common sense but it is deeper than that too.

So I was thinking during my sleepless night last night…  has anyone else noticed the spelling of the word “night” has now changed to “nite”?  I inquired to some of my friends why and they informed me it was due to texting…  it has become an accepted way to write the word now because the “g” and “h” were on the same key (back in the day before the little keyboards), and that it was too hard for people to push that key two times in a row b/c they had to wait between.  Anyway – I think this is a ridiculous reason to change the official spelling of the word, but all media has tended to pick it up too.  For me, I will always spell the word “night” with the “gh”.

Okay – so how does a silly little word like that relate to the verse that I chose to look at for the day?  I am not saying that spelling the word “night” – “nite” is sinful or wrong, what I am saying is that it started because a trend.  It became acceptable because so many people were doing it.  People were dong this because it was easier, it was more fun, it didn’t make them have to work so hard.  Now, the world sees it as appropriate and good and acceptable.  What else is like that?

Back when I was younger (and I may be dating myself), living together before you were married was sinful, it was scandalous if someone was pregnant before they were married, now it is accepted and by some considered good.  So did the guidelines in the Bible for this change?  No!  our society did.  Our society said – it is fine – go ahead and do it – do what feels right for you.  How can you be expected to commit to someone if you haven’t tested them out first…  So society has told us that this is fine and acceptable.   There are so many more examples of this.

I know that I am going to upset some people with this post- so I apologize for upsetting you, but who should we be following?  The Spirit and the Word of God or the sinful nature?  I want my mind set on what the Spirit desires and to ensure that I do that is to be sure my relationship with Jesus and the Spirit is right.

do I mis-use the Bible?

WOW!   This morning I sat and started to read through Ecclesiastes.   I don’t know if the author of Ecclesiastes, Perhaps King Solomon, had a very sarcastic view on life or if he was just babbling.   But I can definitely see how this book could get a lot of people into trouble if they don’t know the full book or continue to read.   There are verses in there that say things like; eat, drink and enjoy the days on earth because they are meaningless, it is good to enjoy your time on earth and do not worry about anything. To get the full meaning of the book, you need to read it all- the true gems are the last two verses.   This book was written by someone (according to my study Bible) that was near the end of his life, he sees man in pursuit of so many things and vainly pursuing hopes and expectations- but faith teaches him that God has ordered all things according to his own purposes and that we need to accept our limitations.   The last two verses are the wr...

What do you fight about?

I heard a blood curdling scream from the other room, followed by the cries of my other child and then a smack.   I had been sitting at the computer, and leaned my head back closed my eyes, took a deep breath and went to encounter the argument head on.   Apparently my youngest daughter was playing with a stuffed giraffe that my oldest daughter sometimes sleeps with.   Amidst the crying and tears, I was able to formulate the events that took place.   My youngest daughter had gone to the toy room and gotten the giraffe (a green 16” giraffe with brown spots) out of the room and brought it into the other room.   Here, the older sister saw that the coveted giraffe was not in her room and grabbed it from her sister.   The younger one screamed and bit the older sister who then cried and hit the little sister.   As I took another cleansing breath I began dealing with the issue at hand.   It is very difficult to reason with a 2 and 3 year old and let alone ...

Making Imperfections Perfect

Recently I was blessed with the opportunity to re-hash Genesis with a group of friends.   We each took a few chapters and summarized those chapters and went through the group.   We covered it all in about 45 minutes.   It was a lot of information to take in, but also fun to hear our friends breathlessly try to fit in everything that they could about the stories that we already knew, into the short few minutes they were given to do this in.   The book of Genesis has an awful lot of drama.   Hearing pieces of it, I thought a soap opera writer couldn’t have done better themselves.   God makes man perfect, but gives us free will – Man sins- Man is thrown out of the Garden of Eden- Man has two sons- One son kills the other son, the world goes down hill.   God sends a flood to kill everything and start over.   He then calls a man who is really really old to follow him.   Abraham has a wife Sarah- Sarah can’t have babies so tells him to ...
